Funchal

... is the capital of Madeira. There are still many colonial-style buildings and winding cobbled streets. The whole city is nested on a hillside with the green mountains in the back. The historic core of Funchal overlooks the harbour. The natural harbour attracted already in the 15th century early settlers.

I took a long stroll through the city, went to the market and in a wine shop to do some Madeira tasting, was interesting to taste the huge differences of the various Madeira's (age and sweet or dry ... etc).

For lunch I went to a restaurant in the old part of the downtown, and had a plate with fish and a banana gravy which tasted scrumptious.

Later that day I returned to the Hotel since I had to pack my stuff, since that was my last day on Madeira.
